#bikenyc is a community. We’ve harnessed the power of twitter to connect to one another, sharing alerts, updates, venting frustrations and celebrating victories. Sometimes we even get to connect in real life and forge friendships. Often we ride past one another, not realizing that we “know” one another. Regardless, we look out for each other, that’s what being part of a community is all about. #bikenyc is the small town coalition of people on bikes in the geographically massive five boroughs of NYC.
I’ve yet to meet Krys Blakemore in person, but I do know that she is part of the #bikenyc community.
On March 15th, Krys was hit by a car here in Brooklyn. After major surgery, she is unable to walk, work or ride her bike. Her rehab period will be extensive, but a full recovery is planned.
Krys was 718 Cyclery’s first employee, and is the kind of person who would help others at a moment’s notice. She is also the kind of person who would never dream of asking for help…
I am not that kind of person…
The words above are from Krys’s boss, Joe Nocella of 718 Cyclery. We should all be so lucky to have such a boss. He’s set up a fund to help Krys through her recovery period. You can donate here

So let’s show the world what #bikenyc is made of, spread a little love and make her recovery time a little easier. And while you’re at it, keep fighting for safer streets for everyone. It’s important. Truly, it is.
