People on skateboards are part of the people powered transportation movement. Skateboards usually have four wheels, but they’re powered by two legs. Predominantly, the people I see on skateboards tend to be teenage boys. The girls I see on skateboards project an aura extremely confidence and independence.
Over the last few months I’ve been noticing men commuting by skateboard through the streets of NYC too. The great thing about skateboards for transport, is that once you get to your destination, all you have to do is pick it up and carry it inside with you. No worries about having to lock it up outside.
As for skateboards in the bike lanes, it’s great to have them there with those of us on bikes. It’s illegal to ride a skateboard on the sidewalk in NYC (and several of the kids I’ve talked with have received tickets) and the bike lanes provide safe space to travel from point A to B for a demographic of the city that tends to skew fairly young.
Below are just a few of the beautiful faces you might see around NYC on skateboards.
