One Response to Bring the Music with You

  1. Albert Ahronheim says:

Yesterday around 3PM I happened to notice that I was seeing cyclists every block, and, not insignificantly, none were “commercial” cyclists. And not a single one was wearing a helmet.

A striking realization that we are Amsterdam.

Later than day I had fun conversations with:

    1) An unhelmeted middle-aged guy on a bicycle with a reed basket who greeted me with a “whoo” as I passed him on Madison Avenue. He was a recent arrival from England and many other more bike-friendly countries. Now an Upper East Sider. (And now he knows about TA.) 2) A couple lycra-sunglasses-helmet-clad young guys who inexplicably stopped at a red light on the Central Park loop. I was rather stunned, so I asked them if they knew something I didn’t. They turned out to be visitors from London and were just wondering at the presence of lights in the park. I gave them a courteous police escort through, asked them to just be aware of and courteous to pedestrians (as several lycra-ists unheedlingly sped through, to undo all my outreach) and warned them about the cars pouring in at 6th Avenue.
