A few weeks ago, friend and fellow cycling advocate William Vallejo approached me about co-organizing an event in conjunction with “La Cuidad Verde” and their Velo-City award winning Cycling Visionaries movement, Bicycles For Life.
Hmm, a chance to encourage more people to choose bikes and create safer streets in NYC? Count me in.
So here’s what we’re planning- we’re hosting a ride modeled on the annual Memorial Ride where several rides from points across NYC meet up at a convergence point. It’s important to honor the memory of those that shouldn’t have died, but rather than mourning loss of life on this ride we choose to celebrate life. We also want to celebrate the important (and needs to be continued) transformation of NYC’s streets from car dominated public spaces to more livable people oriented public spaces. This is going to be slow roll. It’s not a race. It’s simply about the journey from A to B and enjoying the company of like minded people. We just want to spread a little #bikeNYC love.
1pm, three meet-ups:
6th Avenue and Houston St, Manhattan
Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn
34th Ave and 77th St, Queens – See more at:
We’ve chosen Times Square as our convergence point. Symbolically, Times Square is the “Crossroads of the World” and what better place to have the Velo (r)Evolution come together? We’ll take a moment for a peaceful symbolic gesture to remind NYC (and the world) that people on bikes (and foot or long board or scooter) aren’t going away and that it’s a good thing. From Times Square our ride continues to ‘getting closer to car-free’ Central Park and anyone who wants to stick around is invited to join us for a bit of picnicking and socializing. Because once you get to where you’re going, isn’t it better to take some time to enjoy it with friends?
So save the date: September 22, 2013. Times and start points to be announced soon. You can check back here or follow the #bikes4life #bikeNYC hashtags on twitter.
Hope to see you soon.
In the meantime my dear fellow NYC residents, don’t forget to vote in our upcoming primary election on Tuesday September 10, 2013. If you’re reading this blog, most likely you care about safer and more livable streets. Vote with your pedals. Vote with your feet. Vote for a StreetsPac endorsed candidate.
With love from people like you and me, aka- The Bicycle Lobby. We are all-powerful. Walk. Bike. Vote.
